Jason Cannon
Jason Cannon has been active in music since the age of six, and actually started out playing drums. When he was 14, his mother asked him if he would be interested in playing guitar, since it was difficult to practice on the drums living in an apartment complex. After learning three chords, his uncle bought him a Teisco Del Rey guitar and a silvertone amp, which ended up sitting in the corner of his room for about eight months. Around that time Jason was invited to his first live concert – Night Ranger. He was astonished at Jeff Watson and his playing; that eight-finger tap was really cool! It was after this show that he decided playing a guitar wouldn’t be too bad after all. He began practicing daily and received a lot of help and instruction from his grandfather, who had been a musician all of his life; he was also Jason’s biggest influence. In the years since Jason started playing, he has been in many different bands playing many different styles of music: Rock, Country, Jazz and Fusion, to name a few; and has also done session gigs in various studios. Jason also began giving lessons and instructing almost 15 years ago, ranging from private lessons to various sections of high school marching bands. Jason feels that his percussive background has been a major benefit in playing guitar, because it taught him timing and articulation of phrasing rhythms and solos. The players that influenced him outside of his grandfather are: George Lynch, Steve Vai, Jake E. Lee, Al DiMeola, Frank Gambale, Lee Ritenhour, George Benson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Warren DiMartini and John Sykes. Jason is most grateful to God for his gift and feels music is a gift from Him, that needs to be honed and sharpened for His glory.
